FAQs

Here are some answers to questions we are frequently asked. Please contact us if you can’t find the answer you need.

General Questions

What is Gift Aid and how do I make sure the Trust can claim Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is an income tax relief designed to benefit charities. If you're a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid increases the value of your charity donations by 25%, because the charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift – at no extra cost to you.

By making sure all of your supporters that are UK taxpayers provide on the sponsor form their name, their home address (not club, school, church, etc) including their postcode, and that they tick the Gift Aid box on the form, we can claim Gift Aid on their donations.

For one-off donations, please click here to download the Gift Aid Declaration form that we can use to claim from HMRC.

If I make a donation, will I receive an acknowledgement?

Yes. We are very grateful and therefore we would be delighted to send you a certificate of thanks, by email, so please provide us with your email address when you send your donation. Please check your spam folder as, unfortunately, many of our certificates find their way there.

Can I use your logo?

Not without our consent, In order to discuss this, please contact press@littleprincesses.org.uk.

Can a representative from the Trust come to my event and talk about the charity?

This is sometimes possible if the venue is located near to our office in Hereford or very local to Hereford. As we are such a small charity and operate with minimum staff, we do not have representatives available to travel long distances. However, members of the LPT team do travel across the country to visit our associated hospitals and salons, and if we happen to be in your area, we would love to coincide our visit. Please email us on info@littleprincesses.org.uk - we will check our diary and will be back in touch with more information. If we can't attend your event, we’re always happy to send a video message, just email press@littleprincesses.org.uk.

Hair Donations

I see on other cancer websites different minimum length requirements for hair. What is the correct one?

The minimum length of hair that we can accept is 7inches/17cm. However, we do currently have sufficient stock of hair measuring between 7 and 11 inches, and that is why we encourage all our supporters to donate hair that measures 12 inches and above.

Frequent donations of the shorter lengths could bring storage costs to the charity and we, understandably, would prefer to use our resources to provide wigs to children and fund vital research into childhood cancers.

We cannot guarantee the accuracy of the content appearing on other organisations’ websites so please find our hair donation guidelines here.

Can I have my hair cut for The Little Princess Trust even though it is highlighted and bleached?

As long as your hair is in great condition, we can accept highlighted and bleached hair. Please check out our hair donation guidelines here.

Can I donate grey hair?

As our wigs are destined for children and young people, we cannot accept large amounts of grey hair or grey hair that has been dyed a semi-permanent natural colour (as the dye will eventually wash out to reveal the grey)

Donations containing elements of grey hair can be used IF the overall quality of the hair is very good. If the majority of the hair is of a useable colour and in good condition, the grey hair can be removed and the suitable coloured hair used.

Can I donate dreadlocks?

Dreadlocks cannot be used in our wigs. Part of the preparation to blend hair donations together involves combining individual strands of hair. All hair must be able to be combed to separate these individual hairs.

Can I have my hair cut even though it is layered?

Yes as long as the length of the layers is at least 7″/17cm long (the longer, the better)!

Do you accept curly hair?

In reference to the curl chart below, our wig manufacturers are currently unable to use 4a, 4b & 4c.

Curl Chart
Ultimately, the decision as to whether or not any hair can be used is made by our wig manufacturers.

Please be reassured that a tightly curled wig can be supplied to a wig recipient by either curling the hair after the wig has been made or by using one of our specialist suppliers.

I have curly hair, should I straighten it before I have it cut and should I measure it when it is straight or curly?

Your hair should be measured and cut whilst it is in its natural state (curly). Please see the above question for more information regarding curly hair.

My hair consists of two different colours - can I still donate it?

If your hair colours are natural (black, blonde brown, ginger, etc), and in good condition, then yes - we can use your hair. The colours can be separated and the suitable coloured hair will be used.

Can I donate my hair extensions?

We can only accept Great Lengths hair extensions that are 16 inches or longer. The extensions must be sent to us directly by a Great Lengths Salon. Find your nearest salon, here.

Do I need to shave my head to donate my hair?

Whilst we are hugely grateful for long hair donations, we would like to stress that it is not at all necessary to have a complete head shave.

It is very brave to donate a lot of hair and we encourage our donors to think carefully before committing to a big cut. For donors under the age of 18 who do still wish to shave their heads, you will need approval from your parent/legal guardian. We would also advise consulting with your school as some schools have policies on the minimum acceptable length of a haircut.

Does the Trust have links with hairdressers that will cut my hair for free?

Headmasters, the official salon for The Little Princess Trust, will cut your hair for free if you are donating 12 inches or more. They have 60 salons based in London and across the South East. You can find your nearest salon, here: https://www.headmasters.com/find-a-salon/

Can you let me know as soon as my hair has arrived?

The Trust will email you a certificate as soon as possible to thank you for your kindness. Be sure you include an email address on the hair donation slip when you send your hair.

Can I send you some before and after my hair cut photos?

Yes. We would love to see them! Please click on HERE to upload your photos.

Do you provide clear bags for my hair donation?

No, we don’t provide any bags.

We encourage our donors to be as environmentally friendly as possible when sending hair donations.

At present, the best way to send us your hair is in a zip lock/resealable clear bag (which we can then recycle) inside a cardboard or heavyweight paper envelope (feel free to reuse your previously used packaging!).

Can I send hair to you even though I live abroad?

Yes, we are delighted to receive hair donations from abroad. We encourage our international donors, just like our UK supporters, to send us hair donations of 12 inches plus, as we currently have sufficient stock of hair that measures between 7 inches and 11 inches. Frequent donations of this size could bring storage costs to the charity and we, understandably, would prefer to use our resources to provide wigs to children and fund vital medical research.

Make sure you have the parcel weighed and pay the correct postage. Then please post it to this address:
The Little Princess Trust
Broadway House
32-35 Broad St
Hereford
HR4 9AR
UK

How much does it cost to post my hair donation to the Trust, if I live abroad?

Please contact your local postal service provider for this information.

I am not in a position to organise a fundraising event as well as have my hair cut. Can I still send in my hair?

The Little Princess Trust needs financial donations as well as hair donations, in order to fund the actual manufacturing of the wigs. Every penny that you can raise, really does count. However, if you are not able to fundraise, we are still very appreciative of your hair donation.

How long after I have sent my hair, will I receive my certificate?

We hope to email a certificate within a week or two of receiving your wonderful hair donation. Please bear with us as it can take longer when we have an unexpected peak in hair donations. If you have not received your certificate within two weeks of posting your donation, please contact us on info@littleprincesses.org.uk
or call us on: 01432 352359.

Why have I not received a certificate?

Unfortunately, many of the certificates we send via email arrive in people's spam folders. So please check the spam or junk section of your emails for your certificate. The other main reason is that the email address given to us is spelt incorrectly or is undecipherable so please use block capitals when filling out the hair donation form.

Can I have a photo of the child that receives my hair?

No. Once the hair reaches the Trust, it is no longer tracked on an individual basis and we do not release details of the children or young people that we help.

Will my hair definitely be used by The Little Princess Trust to make a wig for a child/young person?

Ultimately, the decision as to whether or not your hair will be used is made by our wig makers so we can't 100% guarantee that it will definitely be made into a wig. However, if you follow our hair donation guidelines it is very likely that your hair will be used.

What happens to my hair once it reaches you?

If your hair donation is in line with our guidelines, it will be sent to our wig manufacturer in China to form part of one wig. It can take from approximately ten hair donations to make a single wig.

Can I donate my hair to be used specifically in a wig for my friend?

We are unable to track hair donations once they have been sorted into lengths and colours so unfortunately, we cannot guarantee which wig will contain your hair.

If my wig wears out, can I have another?

For a cancer diagnosis, we are able to provide wigs for the duration of your treatment. You can request a wig, here.

Can I donate my hair if I have recently had headlice?

The hair needs to be completely free of hair lice or eggs before you cut it. We recommend waiting until you are completely certain that there are no traces of lice in the hair, before cutting your hair to donate.

Can I donate henna-dyed hair?

We cannot accept hair that has been dyed using henna. Henna-dyed hair gradually fades over time which could affect the overall colour of a wig.

Can I donate hair that was cut a long time ago?

We can only accept hair that has been cut within the last 5 years and has been preserved in good condition. These conditions are as follows:
1. Dry
2. Clean
3. Out of direct sunlight and heat
4. At a constant temperature
5. In a sealed, air-tight container
